Royal Farewells and Triumphs
St John's Smith Square, St John's Church Smith Square, SW1P 3HA , [Venue Details]A unique choral spectacle closes LFBM 2025, transferring from the Palace of Versailles to Smith Square Hall, Westminster, for its only London tour date.
Experience the pomp and pageantry of Royal Farewells and Triumphs, a grand procession of Anglo-French choral works performed by the Choir of New College Oxford and French period ensemble Marguerite Louise.
Directed by Robert Quinney and Gaétan Jarry, this programme brings together two thriving musical cultures and two themes. First, the solemnity of national loss – the funeral of Queen Mary II through the music of Henry Purcell. Second, the pageantry of coronation and the glory of Louis XIV’s court.
This collaboration not only bridges nations but also connects eras, highlighting how 17th-century royal music conveys universal emotions — grief, love, gratitude, joy — that continue to resonate today.
